Hollyhock truly is an old garden favorite, with a long blooming season. Usually considered a short-lived perennial in Zones 3-8, but may live for several years if stalks are cut off at their bases after the flowers fade. Makes an excellent screening plant to hide unsightly places. Check nurseries such as Burpee for seeds.
I made these as a child. Hollyhocks, a truly old time flower! Would like to see them more often! The black ones were my favorite! They made fantastic make believe witches!
Looks like, I know how to make the fairy like flower arrangement: Turn the fully opened flower upside down.to make the waist-down part . then get one that is halfway between fully opened and a bud to create the head to the waist part of the lady flower figure. But what type of flower is it? Wow some plants have weird ways of mimicking humans/animals.. . . and of course vice versa.
We use to play bride with these flowers when we were little girls. The White hollyhocks were always the bride and the pink ones were the maids of honor !
Many moons ago I remember making them from the Hollyhocks that grow by the side of our barn in Michigan, and floating them in the birdbath. Was just telling a friend about it last week. 💖 Childhood memories!!
I used to make these when I was a little girl from Holly Hocks. I’d use the bottom of square egg cartons as a float and set the girls on them and decorate the carton w/other flowers and have a parade. Soooo fun and pretty.
Oh my ! Be still my heart! Someone, when I was young taught me to make these Hollyhawk ladies! Maybe my dear Gram because she did have lots of these flowers in many colors. Oh! the ladies were so glorious all dressed up for the dance!
As a little girl I spent hours making these dolls , The hollyhocks are hard to find today but they made beautiful dolls to play with. It was fun making them.
I still have some old seeds that i have saved from years ago. Someday when i place to plant them ill see if they will grow. I was surprised to see packets of seeds for them at Lowes recently.
Love Love hollyhock dolls. Played with them as a child. Many fancy balls and parties. Taught my children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren to make them
I used to make these out of the hollyhocks in our yard. I made a pretend ball out of several and had a grand party in the roots of the huge shade tree in the back yard. Complete with music, I always sang along as they danced. Memories!
As children, we used to peel the petals apart and they’d stick all day as earrings! We got our rhizomes from Home Depot. Get the doubles! It’s the 2nd year and they are 9 feet tall!
I remember making these as a child they are hard to get started you have to plant in sunny area & leave them alone. I love them different colors even black
