I look at pictures like this and I wonder — how did they ever construct this? They didn’t have any of the construction materials we have today, nor modern ways of hoisting bricks, etc. I have seen whole books of castles like this, mostly German ones. Boggles my mind how they were ever put up. Look at the very top-most peak. How in the world did the workmen get up there?
Two interesting facts about this castle: 1) built prior to unification of Germany. King of Bavaria bankrupted his nation in building this castle which accounts for many portions of it’s interior being unfinished. 2) it was used in WWII by the Nazis as one of the largest storage areas for looted artwork from all over Europe. That, plus cultural significance and beauty of the structure, made it a location put off limits to attack by allies during the war. And yes, I have been there and have many beautiful photos shot both daylight and at night. My favorite on is a photo shopped picture much like the one in this post done at night with a full almost orange moon rising above the parapets. Had to photo shop it because the moon wouldn’t cooperate and rise where I wanted it to. Damned inconsiderate that! 😉
I was there when in my early sixties. Rich, ELke and Byron and I rode up the mountain in a horse drawn carriage. Such a beautiful castle! We climbed up a narrow staircase to the top of the tallest turret. What a view! We stayed all night then in a frei dem zimmer (bed and breakfast) and greeted our host the next morning with guten morgen which was a good portion of my knowledge of the German language at that time!
Loved this ….simply gorgeous. Will never walk up it again either, thought I would when I did it at 35 yrs of age in the 70’s, so we all know that will never happen again!
We visited back in the 70s when living in Germany. We joined the German speaking guide as the English speaking guide had a queue a mile long! With a little help from the guide and the group we enjoyed a lovely visit. It is the most beautiful castle inside and out. I still have the jigsaw of this winter view as a momento!!
It is beautiful and the craftmanship of the wood carvings inside is beautiful, as is the view, but the family castle beside it called Howenschwangau that has been actually lived in is overall more interesting.
We went there several years ago, but were part of a group, so we didn’t have the option of taking a carriage. That would have been nice, as that is a long, hard walk up that road! It was beautiful inside in the rooms that we were allowed to see. I remember some mosaic tile floors that were gorgeous, but we had to walk around them as the tiles are wearing out from all the traffic.
I have been there!! Totally awesome. It is near the Black Forest where the Brothers Grimm wrote all the fairy tales. My almost favorite place next to the Cliffs of Moher!
We were in Austria and I had the choice to ski or visit the castle. My friend, Toni, chose to see the castle and said it was phenomenal. I went skiing and those Alps are pretty awesome also. Many spectacular things to see and do on the bucket list and haven’t missed many of mine in my 77 yrs.
THis view is magnificent but inside is even more magnificent and luxurious.Built by Ludwig11 of Bavaria. The cost nearly bankrupted the country and Ludwig was arrested and incarcerated .. He was declared insane. Can’t remember how it ended but the castle is one of the magnificent wonders of the modern world that must have earned millions of dollars of tourist money for Bavaria. Not such a waste of funds after all.
Beautiful. Walked up there when we visited our first German exchange student in 1980. Christoph was from Augsburg, so we were lucky enough to see most of Bavaria. All beautiful. Pam
Bobbie (Lisa Hodges) I always think of you when I see these beautiful pictures of Germany…what an amazingly beautiful country you got to grow up in..) but I’m sure glad you and Dennis are here now…⚘
That is the most beautiful castle and the little quirky there is even a Cabe Room in it beautiful scenery outside you have no idea hopefully other people had been there also and I’m not talking about Disney world or Disneyland
I was there and it is every bit as beautiful as the pictures. The inside is magnificent to the point of decadence with all the ornate gold trimmings!!! The views from the castle windows are priceless.
Yes when we were station in Germany we visited this castle 3 times It is beautiful They have a bus that will take you to it if you don’t want to walk It pretty high up on the hill This king who lived there also had 2 other castles built as well
when my husband was stationed in Germany ,HE and my daughter Cathy and I , went there . she was only 4or 5. that was a long walk up there. it was beautiful, i loved it. she doesnt remember it . one of my best memories!!!!!!
My son in law was stationed in Stuttgart & was able to visit this beautiful castle, a trip of a lifetime & at Christmas time. Will never forget the experience 😍❤️❤️❤️❤️
Been there twice. Once in the 1970s and again in 1990s. It was heartbreaking how much vandalism had taken place in 20 years. No respect for the past; therefore, there can be no learning from the past! 😡
Wow, I can’t believe I was there and I walked that long curvy road over 40 years ago. I was pregnant and I went into labor after that! It was worth it cause it is so beautiful there.
Went there years ago and it was breathtaking. Can’t imagine all that beautiful work being done back then with what equipment they had to work with. Amen

This truly is a fairytale castle-I was there in 1996 with my husband, daughter and son-in-law. We came up that winding road in a horse drawn carriage
Been there and went thru it! It is beautiful, all I wanted to do was stand and look out at the country and dream of growing up there!!!

Remember it well. The steep walk uphill to get to the castle! Loved it! One of the most beautiful places I have ever been to.

Been there. Had central heating from the kitchen. Build by Crazy Ludwic who pretty much bankrupted Germany. Golden throne room was never completed.
Went there years ago and it was breathtaking. Can’t imagine all that beautiful work being done back then with what equipment they had to work with. Amen
So can you stay the night, or does someone live their. Is it open in winter? Have always been fascinated about castles .
