Andha Naal | Difference between inspiration and copy | Video Essay with Tamil Subtitles
What is the difference between true inspiration and “inspiration”? In the recent years, Tamil cinema audience have come to label certain films, scenes, and even style as “inspiration”. While the word inspiration has a different meaning, in this context the meaning is more in line of copying. So what is true inspiration and what is not?
EDIT : I forgot to mention that the storyline of Andha Naal was loosely based out of a British film “Woman in question (1950)”. It is hard to say which film inspired Andha Naal more but the end product was truly unique.

Good stuff!
You are wrong @Moving Images….Andha Naal is still very far ahead of movies coming out even today.Especially like the movies you labelled as copied. Please suggest me some good old movies like these _/_.You are doing a great job, wish I could be of some help to promote your channel.
Itharkuthan Japan poi vantheergala.. You beauty 😍
Jiii that’s k. B
Nt s. B
I am a big admirer of this movie. Its an intelligent blend of orson welles citizen kane and kurosawa’s rashomon ! This movie should be made into a lesson on how to write a whodunit.
So sad, that this great film is a box office failure…
Aandha naall mega movie
Hi this is Tony, you watching every frame a painting. Sounds similar… Well true inspiration.
You are confusing us with Plagiarism and structure. Two very different things. Roshomon or Journey of a Hero, all these are structures. The story that you choose to tell in that structure is your own. Will you call Edge of tomorrow Groundhog Day’s copy? Plagiarism is blatant copying of a scene or sequence of shots to tell the same emotion. Two very different things.
Also inspiration can be both from the same medium or otherwise. Kurosawa was inspired by Japanese paintings. It’s is always more interesting when cross over inspiration strikes. A note of music decides the tone of a film for instance. Inspiration from the same medium usually leads to mediocre art.
A.V.meyyapa settiyar was inspired by the film roshomon and ask s.balachander to direct it and he produced the film kudoos go to A.V.M

is it S. Balachander or K. Balachander?
Does anyone know where I can watch Andha Naal with English subtitles?
Hi Kishore, I have seen both Andha Naal and Roshomon, and I have to strongly disagree with the alleged similarities between the two. Unlike Roshomon or the eponymous effect, there is no character in the movie providing contradictory versions of the same event. They merely state the facts as they know it. Infact it is more akin to a Hercule Poirot case, where the narrative is stitched out of all testaments combined.
I feel Andha Naal is almost always unfairly bogged down by the ‘copy’ tag, while it should be celebrated as one of the best films in Tamil cinema, with its varied and intriguing ideas, performances, and execution.
Where I can get Andha naal full movie? please help me 😊
good work kishore.
“Idharku dhan Japan poi vandheergala?” Lol! 😂
You are awesome bro
sarkar hindi movie story is from godfather but due to different charcters, its a total different movie
See i hate movies routinely made on love angle shit all the time, it sends often a wrong message to growing kids as a girl as an object and love affair must have in life , movies outside this realm either borrows from korean or english flicks lets admit we follow what others first tried and just polish it up to look original. Our indian mindset is never gonna come up innovative coz we want to hold on to our shit old style of livig and thinking pattern tht not gonna change for sure…until we will import ideas or copy from west east south north
Thanks for revisiting our classics. Copy or inspired making itself is an art. Always ideas develop from something. The great S. Balachander knew what he was doing. How many are like him now? His "kannadi maligai" is only one of its kind in Tamil cinema till date.

I recently came across your videos and I’m really glad to see video essays on Indian Cinema. However, I wish you delve deeper into certain ideas and organize them in a clearer manner. Make longer videos man, you introduce very interesting points but you don’t explore them fully, I hope you take this in a positive way.
Good work..You could have referred to this balachander as Veenai balachander, because people might think the other Balachander
the final "itharku than japan poi vandeergala" :p
Yes truly a visionary director S.Balachander
AN INCREDIBLY INTRIGUE OBSERVATION.. THANKS FOR SHARING #KISHORE
Good job Kishor! Keep it coming !
Anyone Watched 2020 ✌
Dude you are awesome. I never imagined Tamil movies having so many intellectual story telling that it had. Sadly nowadays all I come to see is blatant rip-offs and copies. Thanks for the informative videos.
Also I request you to make video on original Tamil Film genre and its storytelling devices and tropes.

Wow! what a dissection. I like Wisecrack channel videos a lot. A person from India doing such a high quality in the middle of crappy channels and slap stick comedy, hats off Moving images! I would like to attend a course from you, if you wish to teach me about making quality videos like these. Thanks for the awesome videos again and keep doing them.
Great video once again.. Can you talk about more KB movies. Suggestions : Varumayin niram sivappu, Aval oru thodarkadhai, Nizhal nijamagirathu, Sindhu bhairavi, Kalki, Major Chandrakanth, Ethir neechal.
I like the way you end the video. Good content.
he is k.balachandar not s.balachandar
Is this Ronak?? Voice is very similar!
Andha Naal is pinnacle of Tamil Cinema…what a film….
I love your videos Kishore! And plagiarism is a topic that I have been battling with for so long. As a teenager I was a huge fan of Harry Potter and I used to write very original stories based on JK Rowling’s characters. Sometimes only the name was borrowed but the characters were placed in different places, time periods and situations. I even remember doing a lot of research for each of my stories. As I grew up, especially in the latter part of my teen years I remember being forced into studying all the time, and I didn’t have the freedom or space to think of new ideas or as my teachers would put it "indulge in my day dreams". On top of that I stopped performing well in class, and a total lack of motivation to do anything.
I used to sit in front of a blank word document unable to write anything. I could not think of anything original and whatever I did write was borrowed from somewhere. Sometimes, when I watch badly made movies like Puli or even the recent Thaana Serndha Kootam, I sort of understand what the writer’s mental head space is. I am not justifying them stealing material, it is just that there is a difference between them and me: I stopped publishing my content after I realized that none of the ideas were mine but those writers didn’t. I wish people would wake up and understand what a writer’s block is and draw true inspiration from events, rather than mimicking someone else’s story as their own.
Japanese movie was inspired AV Meiyappa Chettiyar and he asked S Balachander to made this movie in Tamil ❤️
Is plagiarism still considered piagiarism if you take a scene from any movie but give it your own spin? Like the guitar playing scene from Ajith’s movie and Mr Bean… One was meant to be funny while the other is meant to be terrifying/give crazy vibes….
