I love Eric’s philosophical ideas. He’s definitely on a different level.
Interesting. Eric pretty much says he can’t sound as good as he used to because they don’t make the right vacuum tubes anymore.
Love Eric. Was surprised the late great Allan Holdsworth was never mentioned though bearing in mind Eric’s not so dissimilar tone, and his approach to linear playing and sheets of sound. Great informative interview, and Eric clearly is a deep thinking and warm human being.
I cannot believe they shook hands, and weren’t locked into their own bubbles with masks on and squirting hand sanitizer on each other… truly horrifying that humans lived this way before…
My dog who is 14 years old now is named after Cliffs of Dover!
3%x4=12% better. Not 20.
The king of tone!
Rick is just great. And Eric was great too..lol..as always great job Rick
A former neighbor of mine, in Cincinnati ,…writer Brad Balfour…got me reading CIRCUS Magazine, a great publication dedicated to rock music, during my late teens. I first learned about guitarists like Tony MacAlpine, Yngvie Malmsteen, Joe Satch, Eddie (R.I.P., Master) Van Halen, and Eric Johnson reading the magazine. Have been huge fans of these guys , among others, ever since.
This guy is flat out just a great musician…brilliant pianist, and one of the very best guitarists that ever picked one up. Keep goin’, man.
Great Interview ! Thank You
A Total Human Being! Such depth, inspiration and knowledge! Long live Eric Thanks Rick!
aw its nice to know hes watching guitarist devolving on YouTube <3
this is one of those interviews that is just as inspiring, just as informative and no doubt as expansive as any I’ve watched or read. The last time anyone mentioned Mclaughlin and Birds of Fire was when my first guitar teacher brought in the cassette and said "here, take this home and let’s talk next week." That led me through to In a Silent Way, Herb Ellis, Larry Carlton, John Scofield (what a show at Blues Alley!), and so many more players to get lost and found in. With a mid-80s break for Bruce Watson and Marshall Crenshaw and some Robert Cray, it was back to studying these jazz greats, as well as a deeper dive into Carcassi and Sor. When I first discovered Eric’s album ‘Tones’, I couldn’t talk for weeks. Thanks Rick and Eric for doing this interview – it’s fresh and re-stabilizing all at once. p.s. I got started with playing guitar once I heard Andy Summers’ solo on ‘Bombs Away’.
Yap yap yap👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻
Genius
The first time I heard him was on ACL, about 35 years ago. Finally, caught him in Raincouver, early ’90’s and was so overwhelmed, I drove down to Seattle for his next show at the Paramount.
It’s not surprising to hear Eric reference other musicians and instruments beyond guitar, as direct influences…Lenny Breau/Bill Evans & Renoir, John Entwistle/French horn, Joni Mitchell/painting, etc., stepping outside the box. Retaining a "child-like" openness…tell me he doesn’t get it!?
Thank you…great interview!
Booooo to auto tune!
Eric is the Texas Tone Master
So Austin Tx introduced EJ AND SRV?! wooow
You (Eric) hit the mark….. Passion !
You know immediately it’s Eric Johnson!! Awesome!!!
How much pot did Eric Johnson smoke lol
Awesome interview from both sides.
Extremely insightful questions. The music knowledge in the room is crazy.
Some crazy good Cat opened for Rush, many years ago. The audience was all looking at each other thinking, ‘Who the heck is this guy?’
That was my introduction to Eric Johnson.
Eric is the master of bittersweet chord progressions. And regardless of his humble insistence that his style is merely what he took from others, his sound is truly unique. No one else sounds or plays quite Eric Johnson.
What a great interview, jam packed with interesting relevant information.
Thanks Rick and Eric.
If I could have one wish it would be to have one percent of Eric Johnson’s talent
I really enjoyed that. Golf ha ha ha ha.
Mr.Beato. Guys like us in our 50’s must look at some of these Players and think "Wait a minute, this guy isn’t 60. I just bought his record like a year ago" Then you realize that record came out 30? years ago?.. kills me everytime. So that would make Justin Beiber 40?
Playing the guitar is a beautiful tool to deal with anxiety and connect with ones soul. Powerful string instrument, and Eric has inspired me a lot. Really nice to hear the man share his perspectives.
Your sound is your voice – how can you sing if your voice is shite?
Hope you took a photo of those sound settings : )
Not only a huge musician, but seems to be one of the best people you can come across, so calm and so down to earth you could meet him in a street somewhere and never realize he is this big guitar legend.
Dying to Know what Frampton thought on your Led Zepplin! Absolutely adore you and Eric! Peace!
Eric is one of my idols. As far as music today, Those that want a background track to tap their foot to, can have that from the radio. But the people hunting for more complex and interesting music know where to find it. Music is not all just pop music.
what a great guy. love his humility, and love his playing even more
Second gen swed?
Eric Johnson is the buddha of guitar
You two are so much fun to listen to. You relate and compliment each other!!
ERIC JOHNSON, INSPIRING!!!!!!!
That was a great interview. I’m really happy I discovered your channel. All your youtube stuff has been really well done. You have the perfect background in music for these videos. The fact that your tastes are so varied is cool too. From Megadeth to Gordon Lightfoot.
Eric Johnson was all over rock radio in 1990 in the Detroit area. I saw him in concert opening for Rush in 1991.
SOMEONE MAKE THIS MAN A SIGNATURE AMP
Is the imagination of the current "musicians " less than in the past? Also IMO the audience isn’t in tune to "real complex music." They don’t have the time or make the time to enjoy real good music. That sounds harsh but I think it’s true.
Rick is a down to earth cool human being.
One of your best videos!!!
Such a beautifull soul…deep !
YES
Such a gentle soul and monster player. Great interview, Rick. 👍👍👍
Modern popmusic is Muzak. It’s not about art or skill anymore.
Eric , l’m a man but l love you !
